There are many different events on Exmoor throughout the year, from cultural to sporting, but one of the beauties of Exmoor is that it never seems crowded - you don't have to go very far at all to escape. Happening on Exmoor soon

Dunster Country Fair, at Dunster Castle, features pony and dog shows, falconry displays and craft stalls. It's on July 28th.

There'll be orchestral and chamber music at a variety of venues during the Minehead and Exmoor Festival (July 25th - 31st)

Here's a taste of some later events too...

Cutcombe Fete (which includes a flower show and dog show) is on Saturday 7th August. Definitely worth a look if you're staying at Exmoor House then. Frank normally enters some of his jams, chutneys and cakes for the competitions.

The 2010 Exmoor Explorer mountain bike marathon takes place on 8th August - it starts from Wheddon Cross. If you're taking part or watching, why not make a weekend of it and book a few nights dinner, bed and breakfast at Exmoor House?

August is traditionally showtime, and there will be lots to see, do and buy at Exford Show (August 11th) and Dunster Show (August 20th)

Cyclists will be making their way to Exmoor for another bike event on August 22nd: the Phoenix Ride, an endurance ride which will raise funds for the Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance.

Porlock Arts Festival (9th - 12th September) includes drama workshops, storytelling, discussions with local authors, talks from a wide range of writers - and much more.

The Tornado (a modern steam locomotive) returns to the West Somerset Railway on September 13th to 17th.

Once more the Tour of Britain route includes Exmoor this year, on September 14th. The cyclists will pass through Wheddon Cross, so if you're staying here there's a chance to watch an exciting part of the competition.

The Two Moors Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. There will be a wonderful choice of concerts in a range of interesting venues across Exmoor and Dartmoor, from 30th September to 9th October.

The Autumn North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival is from 1st - 4th October, coinciding with part of the Exmoor Food Festival (2nd -10th October): a double reason to visit! At Exmoor House we will be doing lunches during the Food Festival. Watch this space...

Looking way ahead, December sees the very popular Dunster by Candlelight, on 3rd and 4th December. Very atmospheric, with street entertainment and good Christmas shopping. The town will be closed to traffic and special buses will be running. Dunster gets very crowded, but if you stay here at Wheddon Cross you'll be within easy reach of all the festivities and can enjoy some peace and quiet too!
