Useful information and frequently asked questions about Exmoor House

How do I book?
You can call Rosi and Frank on 01643 841432 or you can book online (NB: if there's no availability showing in the online booking system, it's still worth checking with us as sometimes we close rooms off for operational reasons). A deposit is required, normally by debit card, to confirm your reservation.

Are all the bedrooms fully ensuite?
Yes. Some have a shower, others a bath with a shower over. If you have a particular preference, please ask us when you book.

Are the rooms all the same price?
Yes (the exception being the family room, which takes up to 5 people). All the rooms are slightly different from each other - helping to give the house its unique character - but they are all the same high quality.

Do you allow smoking in any of the rooms?
No - Exmoor House is completely non-smoking.

Is breakfast included in the room price?

It is! Each day there is a choice of the full Exmoor House English breakfast, other hot dishes and lighter options.

Are there tea and coffee making facilities in the bedrooms?
Yes - and other hot drinks as well as coffee and tea; we also provide real, fresh milk.

Do you do dinner?
We do; it's a speciality of ours. Most guests book our dinner, bed and breakfast packages, which work out even better value per night for longer stays. Full details are on the prices page. If you want to book dinner separately or as a non-resident, it's £26.00 for 3 courses and coffee/tea/infusions, or £21.00 for 2 courses (and coffee etc). Dinner start times are normally between 7 and 8pm.

What if I'd like to have dinner, but am arriving too late on the first evening?
Supper trays for late arrivals (after 9pm) cost £14.00 a head; or you could book a snack such as soup or sandwiches.

Do you do packed lunches?

Yes. Picnic lunches can be booked the evening before and cost £8.00 each (there are lighter choices or snacks available too if you don't want to eat too much at lunchtime).

There are some things I don't eat. Would that be a problem?
You've come to the right place: we specialise in catering for our guests' dietary needs, as long as we know in good time before your stay. We do very good, imaginative vegetarian food, and can produce meals to suit many other dietary requirements (e.g. wheat and gluten free, dairy free). Do please contact us to discuss.

Can people who aren't staying at Exmoor House eat there?
Certainly. Advance booking is essential for dinner. We can also usually do breakfast for non-residents - again, it's essential to book in advance. If you'd like to reserve the Exmoor House dining room during the day for a lunch or meeting, please contact us to discuss your requirements. At Snowdrop Valley time in February, the dining room is open to the general public as a tearoom, normally from 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Is Exmoor House licensed to serve alcohol?
Yes; we have a carefully-chosen list of wines, beers from local breweries, Somerset ciders, plus the usual spirits etc. We can serve alcohol to resident guests, their guests, and to non-residents who are having a full meal with us (subject to all drinkers being at least 18 years old, of course). Since we are licensed, we ask visitors not to consume alcohol on the premises that they have bought elsewhere and reserve the right to charge a corkage fee if you 'bring your own'.

What time can I check in, and what time is checkout?
Check-in time is normally between 3 and 5 pm but is also usually possible at other times, provided you've arranged it with us beforehand. Rooms are not usually available before 2pm. Please let us know your approximate arrival time when you book. Checkout is by 10 am.

Do you have Wi-Fi?

Yes, we've recently introduced Wi-Fi because of popular demand. We don't charge for it.

Do mobile phones work on Exmoor?
Most mobiles don't work at Wheddon Cross (Orange is generally the exception). Once you get towards Dunster and Minehead there's reception on Vodafone and some other networks; O2 works in other areas. On parts of Exmoor, e.g. around Winsford, there is no signal at all. If your mobile does work here, we'd be grateful if you'd keep it switched off - or in silent mode - when in the dining room or sitting room with other guests. If you don't have a signal and urgently need to keep in touch, there is a cash payphone in our hall, and the village public phone (card payments only) is just a short walk away.

Can I pay by card?
Yes; we accept most major debit and credit cards (except American Express). We prefer debit cards as it costs less for us to process them; we may make an additional charge if you pay by credit card.

Why don't you have televisions in the guest rooms?
Peace and quiet, so that you can really 'switch off' (excuse the pun) - and, frankly, to be a bit different! Most people love it, even if they thought at first that they would miss watching telly... but who needs tv anyway when there's so much to do on Exmoor and our lovely guest sitting room is the perfect place to read, chat or play games?

Are there any ground floor bedrooms?
All the guest bedrooms are on the first floor, up a full flight of stairs (our access statement gives more detail which you may find helpful).

Do you have any single rooms?

Short answer: no. Long answer: four of our rooms are doubles or twins, the other is a family room, and our pricing is based on full occupancy of the rooms. If available, you can book sole use of a double, at a discount on the room rate for two people. For bed & breakfast, this currently works out at £64.50 per night (the price for 2 people per night is £84). At certain times of year we may charge the full room rate. You can't book sole use of a double room online; you need to call or email us to check availability.

Do you accept children?
Children are welcome. We do have a few commonsense ground rules; you can see these in our booking conditions. The child rate on our prices page applies only to those aged under 12, sharing a family room with parents or guardians. No charge for babies if you bring your own travel cot; there is a small charge for borrowing our cot (please bring your own bedding).

What if I have to cancel my booking?
Once you've booked a room and paid your deposit, we can't sell it to anybody else, and so may well be turning other people away. There will be a charge if you cancel a confirmed booking, ranging from the deposit to the full amount of your stay, depending on the timescale and circumstances. Do you take pet dogs?
No (which is good news for those with animal hair allergies). We don't have any pets of our own, either. There is an excellent kennels not far from Wheddon Cross if you do want to bring your dog on holiday when you stay with us. We have had very good reports from guests who have used the kennels for their pets.

Is there a mimimum stay requirement?
Sometimes: generally over bank holiday weekends and at other times when there are special events happening locally. For parties who book all our rooms (see below) there's a minimum of a two night stay.

Can I book the whole of Exmoor House for a group?
You can: we do house parties for groups of up to 12 people (minimum two nights, on a dinner bed and breakfast basis, or - at Christmas and New Year - full board). Find more details on the house parties page.

Where can I park my car?
There's a car park at the back of the house, with plenty of space for at least six cars.

Can we get to Exmoor House by public transport?
There is a bus stop just a few yards away from Exmoor House that serves the route between Minehead and Tiverton. For more public transport information, see directions

I have a disability. Will Exmoor House be suitable for my needs?
We do everything we can to try and ensure all our guests thoroughly enjoy their time with us. To this end we've prepared an access statement (we can also email or post you a copy if more appropriate). Please feel free to discuss with us any particular requirements, concerns or questions you have regarding your stay, and we'll do our best to help.
