Breakfast at Exmoor House, Wheddon Cross

Bed and breakfast: both are just as important as each other when you're on holiday.

Here at Exmoor House we believe that the quality of things like bread, coffee and sausages is vital. So in our Full English we use dry-cured bacon (with the rind on for extra succulence) and top-notch sausages from our butcher, with free-range eggs from a neighbour's hens.

To drink, we offer decent fruit juice rather than the concentrate stuff, and proper coffee from our local tea and coffee company. We like their Costa Rica blend. There is always a good choice of different teas and infusions too; or hot chocolate if you prefer.

All our bread is home made, and to go with your brown or white toast there is a choice of home-made jams and preserves, also Exmoor honey.

We vary the breakfast menu from day to day, although our traditional English breakfast is always available. Sometimes there might be plump kippers or naturally-smoked haddock with scrambled eggs; or maybe Frank's home-made (sugar free) baked beans - they taste much better than the canned variety, we think, and are free of additives. People who don't eat meat are not forgotten; you won't go hungry after our vegetarian breakfast. If you'd like to try Exmoor porridge, just let us know the evening before (we make our porridge the slow way).

A good breakfast really does set you up, as they say. Many people don't often have time to eat much in the morning, so it is a real luxury to have a freshly cooked meal to start your day. If you are going walking or cycling on Exmoor you'll certainly want to eat well before you set off. And if you just plan on relaxing, it's still nice to enjoy some home-cooked food first thing.

We can also do breakfast for non-residents, if booked in advance, at an inclusive price of £12 per person

Summer on Exmoor

July, August and September are the season of festivals and fairs, so if you're visiting Exmoor in the next couple of months, why not join in the festivities? Visit our events page for some ideas.

But if it's peace and tranquillity you're after, then Exmoor National Park has that in abundance, too.
