Exmoor has it all: wild moorland, forests, secret combes - West Country for steep, wooded valleys - and the coast, all within easy reach. Why not spend a few car free days?
Local walks from Wheddon Cross include to Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor's highest point (about three miles from Exmoor House), or towards the Brendon Hills and Luxborough, and woodland walks taking in Snowdrop Valley. (On our links page you'll find information on public transport providers and about other websites you can visit to get suggestions for car free itineraries on Exmoor).
Horner Woods and Webbers Post are only a few miles away, and slightly further afield there are dramatic coastal walks near Minehead, Porlock Weir, Bossington and Selworthy.
For a flatter walk, try Wimbleball Lake; you can go all the way round (about 9 miles).
There's a good selection of maps and books in the Exmoor House guest sitting room, which you're welcome to borrow during your stay.
Cyclists will find some good challenging rides
on Exmoor: just right to work up an appetite for dinner. One such is the Exmoor
Cycle Route, which follows 2007's Tour of Britain route through Exmoor
and passes through Wheddon Cross. If you're doing a one-way rather than a circular
cycle ride, you could book the Moor
Rover bus to bring you and your bicycle back to Exmoor House.

Exmoor House is very close to the route of the Coleridge Way, the 36-mile
long-distance trail that links Nether Stowey in the Quantocks to Porlock on Exmoor.
If you’re walking the Coleridge Way, why not save your legs for the final push
to Porlock and treat yourselves to two nights dinner, bed and breakfast at Exmoor
House so you can have a rest day? You could take in a Land Rover safari (we will
be happy to help arrange one for you) or enjoy the Exmoor open-top bus ride which
you can pick you up from virtually outside our door on most Tuesdays, Thursdays,
Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer. We can also help guests at Exmoor
House arrange a baggage transfer to Porlock, as long as you let us know in advance.
The Coleridge Way
Of course, you could make Exmoor House your Coleridge Way accommodation
base, so you don't need to worry about baggage at all! This also means that
if you're doing the walk midweek, you'll be able to take advantage of our special
break rates (available for a stay of three or more nights on a dinner, bed
& breakfast basis). To transfer you back here when you've finished your
day's walk, and to your start point the next morning, there is a service called
the Moor Rover
bus, which operates during the summer months (this needs to be pre-booked).
Alternatively you could use our local taxi service.
Other long distance paths on Exmoor
Wheddon Cross is near the starting point
of the Exmoor Ridgeway, a long-distance walk that follows an ancient track
across the moor. There is no accommodation at the half-way point of this two-day
walk, but why not stay at Exmoor House and make use of the Moor Rover bus?
We are also within striking distance of the routes of the Macmillan
Way West, a waymarked trail which runs for 102 miles from Castle Cary to
Barnstaple, and the Samaritans Way, which links Bristol to Lynton.
